MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL

Our video modules offer extraordinarily rich footage that is easy to work with - each in-depth topic addressing a single issue using several hours of footage and comprehensive background and supporting materials. The accompanying cutting-edge curriculum adheres to national standards and provides exciting tools for teachers and students. The curriculum is extremely flexible - it can be used for anything from a two-week to a full-semester project, and comes with how-to videos and other teaching tools. Our collaborative website provides opportunities to work with other schools within US and around the world, and the project offers students a vehicle to create public events and practice their leadership skills.

Footage from Sudan will be available in August 2010, Cuba Cuba will be available in Sept/Oct. 2010, and Japan in August 2011.

Sudan Module Topics

CAUGHT IN THE MIDDLE: Jeda's World Today: An intimate portrait of a 17-year-old woman determined to overcome her life in a Sudanese refugee camp, no matter what the price.      NOTE: this unit is particularly suitable for teachers in Social Sciences who wish to focus on either women's issues or on a Sudanese refugee who is close in age to western high school students.

THE HUMANITARIAN DILEMMA: How to Help the Sudanese Refugees: Humanitarian efforts in the Sudanese and Chadian refugee camps - their successes and failures, and life for an aid worker on the front lines. NOTE: this unit is particularly suitable for teachers in social Sciences who wish to focus on global aid issues with some potential for simple statistical analysis.

THE HEALTH CARE DEBATE: Inside a Sudanese Refugee Camp: Modern medicine and traditional Sudanese healers battle for the lives and loyalty of the refugees. Who will win?  Note: Although this unit conforms to national social studies standards, it has a medical slant and would also be suitable for teachers in science/Biology.

WHO'S IN CHARGE? Politics and Moral Values in a Time of War: Displacement and the high price it extracts from its victims - and the opportunities it can present. Note: Although this unit conforms to national social studies standards, it would be particularly suitable for teachers in Government/Political Science/International Relations.

SURVIVOR: Life After Genocide: Displacement and the high price it extracts from its victims - and the opportunities it can present. Note: this unit is particularly suitable for teachers in Social Sciences/Political Science/International Relations. Because the interviews are in English and the footage very straightforward, this is the best unit for younger students, students who may not be as media-savvy, or teachers with less time.

YOU CAN'T GO HOME AGAIN: Displacement in Africa: Displacement and the high price it extracts from its victims - and the opportunities it can present. Note: Although this unit conforms to national social studies standards, it contains substantial additional materials that would make it particularly suitable for English/literature teachers.
