“The students are fantastic – they are really understanding and experiencing the true challenges of creating a film now. It is exhilarating, as I'm sure I don’t have to tell you! Teacher
TEACHERS
Joining Take 2 can be as simple as a two-week project for a social studies or media class or as sophisticated as a semester-long collaborative effort between several departments that results in an award-winning documentary. The curriculum has been created in a cafeteria-model for maximum flexibility and schools can choose to do anything from Power Point presentations to podcasts to full documentaries. Our goal is to make this the best possible experience for you and your schools.
What to think about before joining
-
Students should be middle school or older, though sophisticated elementary school students with an excellent teacher have been very successful using the footage. Note that the raw footage is rated PG-14.
-
Although students can work individually to create a documentary, we have had the most success when the project is part of a classroom curriculum. Students today are so overwhelmed with other activities that they have difficulties making time for a project that is not a scheduled part of their day and does not have regular adult oversight. Take 2 projects also work well for home-schooled students as long as the family has the necessary computer technology.
Hardware/software/video expertise
-
You and your students must have access to either Mac or PC computers in order to edit the footage. Although your computers don't need to be high-speed, they should be new enough to run at least Windows XP and Office 2003.
-
You will need to use editing software in order to create your videos. Software ranges from iMovie and Moviemaker - which come free with most Macs and PCs - to the very expensive Final Cut Studio. The footage has been tested on Moviemaker (for a PC) and Final Cut Pro, Final Cut Express, and iMovie (for a Mac). Please download our samples clips at the bottom of our Middle&Highschool page to see which format is correct for your computer system.
-
It helps to have someone with basic video editing experience available at least on an advisory basis to help your students with both troubleshooting and editing techniques. Most students have already made movies for Utube, and both iMovie and Moviemaker are highly intuitive, so a dedicated media teacher is not a requirement.
